2月6日，中国驻英国大使刘晓明在伦敦举行新闻发布会，就中国新型冠状病毒感染的肺炎疫情、中国政府采取的防控措施等内容发表讲话。他还就媒体关心的话题回答了记者提问。
The Chinese government has taken a series of decisive and rigorous prevention and control measures since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming said at a press conference on Thursday.
He said the Chinese government has taken the most comprehensive and strict prevention and control measures, many of which go far beyond the requirements of the International Health Regulations. During the press conference, he also said that China is fully confident of defeating the coronavirus.

在发布会上，刘晓明大使强调：“新型冠状病毒感染的肺炎死亡率为2.1%，远低于埃博拉（40.4%），非典SARS（10%），中东呼吸综合征MERS（34.4%）和2009年爆发的H1N1（17.4%）。”
During the press conference, Liu emphasized that, although a large number of people have been infected with the new coronavirus, the mortality rate in China, which stands at 2.1 percent, is very low. This is much lower than Ebola (40.4 percent), SARS (10 percent), MERS (34.4 percent), and H1N1 of 2009 (17.4 percent). In the United States, more than 19 million people have fallen ill with the flu so far this season, with the death toll being 10,000. This is more serious than the coronavirus infection. Currently, the number of cured patients in China is rising. We are fully confident in beating the virus.
疫情对中国经济的影响
关于此次疫情对于中国经济的影响，刘晓明表示需要用一种全面、综合的视角来看待这一问题。刘晓明指出，当前疫情对于包括交通、旅游、酒店、餐饮、电影、娱乐等在内的服务产业造成了相对严重的影响。但他同时表示，这一影响是短期的、暂时的，并不会改变中国的经济发展势头，未来中国经济仍将保持稳健的增长态势。世界银行、国际货币基金组织等机构也均对中国经济前景充满信心。
Liu said the impact on China's economy should be seen from a comprehensive perspective. "At the moment, the epidemic is having a relatively severe impact on the service sector, including transportation, tourism, hospitality，catering，film and entertainment," said Liu. But he also pointed that the impact will be short and temporary and will not change the momentum of China's economy, which will maintain sound growth in a long run. International organizations like World Bank and International Monetary Fund all had full confidence in the future of China's economy.

刘晓明指出，媒体关于疫情的报道应该保持客观公正。他表示近来关于疫情的相关情况受到了包括英国媒体在内的世界各国媒体的关注，许多媒体都进行了客观公正的报道，高度赞扬了中国政府的疫情防控措施，或是给出了合理的建议。但他同时提到，仍有部分媒体报道存有偏见、恶意和不实信息。刘晓明表示，“谣言和恐慌比病毒更可怕，信心和决心才能战胜疫情。”
"Media reports of epidemic should be objective and fair," said Liu, "(The novel) coronavirus has been hitting the headlines in many countries, including here in the UK. Many of the reports speak highly of China's counter-virus efforts or offer objective and reasonable advice. We appreciate all of these." But he also said some reports are biased, and even maintain malicious slander and disinformation.

Teachers and pupils at the school also offered messages of support for the people of Wuhan who are confined to their city to restrict the disease's spread.

Amid reports around Europe of unwelcoming and even hostile behavior towards citizens of Chinese or Asian appearance, the demonstration of solidarity was all the more powerful.
The Chinese-language choir at the school is organized by the Confucius Institute at Ulster University. One third of the project's teachers are from Hubei Province, where the coronavirus outbreak began.
